UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – 17th October 2016

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goal to “end poverty in all its forms everywhere” understands that poverty is a result of many different factors.

The connotations of poverty are predominantly focused on a lack of material goods, however it is necessary to focus on other factors that help to understand the complexities and different forms of poverty.

Thus it is important to understand the multiple issues undergone by those suffering and the focus this year is on the humiliation and exclusion encountered by those who live in poverty.

A4ID Chief Executive Yasmin Batliwala explains the importance of understanding the layers of poverty, “It is necessary to realise that issues such as humiliation and exclusion are another destructive layer to the cycle of poverty. In order to truly end poverty, we must focus on these overshadowed areas and indeed all of the areas of poverty”.
