Welcome to A4ID

Our vision is the law and lawyers playing their full part in the eradication of global poverty.

We partner with

We are delighted to announce that Advocates for International Development (A4ID) and Law Works have agreed to merge and become a single organisation. We hope to complete the merger by mid-summer.  As two of the leading charities in the sector providing vital access to legal services for those who need it most, the merger will create a stronger, more resilient, efficient and effective organisation that is better able to meet the increasing demand we are seeing.

The merged entity will, amongst other things, be a combined brokerage for the provision of domestic and international pro bono legal assistance for individuals, NGOs, and community-based organisations.

The Sustainable Development Goals

How we do it

Using the law as a path to sustainable development

We believe that the law can and should be used more effectively to eradicate global poverty.

But we know that in many instances the law is a barrier to sustainable international development.

Because unequal access to legal expertise can prevent development we ensure everyone engaged in the fight against poverty has access to free legal support.

We have a network of over 50,000 legal experts and to date we have facilitated over £30 million worth of free legal advice for more than 700 development organisations.

Legal solutions to development challenges

We play a strategic role in creating effective and efficient solutions to eradicating global poverty.

Engaging the legal profession in that process, we work towards finding and implementing legal solutions to development challenges.

Our projects increase the impact of development organisations’ work while also influencing policy decisions, supporting social enterprise and empowering local communities.

Positive partnerships across sectors

We work in partnership with lawyers and development organisations to raise awareness about the role law can play in tackling poverty.

We enable lawyers and development organisations to share knowledge and develop new responses to fighting global poverty.

The Sustainable Development Goals

A4ID is committed to inspiring and enabling lawyers to join the global fight against poverty, and to ensure that legal support is available for those engaged in that fight. Please click on the relevant SDG icon to learn more about the specific objectives.

A4ID provides a range of training programmes that are aimed to inform and empower lawyers to get involved in development issues and to assist our development partners to fulfill their own goals on the road to the SDGs.

Knowledge Groups

A4ID organises many different events, exploring the critical role that the law can play in international development.

Legal Pro Bono

The primary method we use for matching supply and demand for legal advice is through our innovative broker service. This delivers pro bono advice by bringing together our legal partners and our development partners, who work together on specific projects furthering the SDGs.
