The Debt and Finance group focuses on the role of debt in developing country finances. Issues include both the positive impact that microfinance loans to small-scale operations can have and the policy arguments around the sustainability and legitimacy of large-scale public and private sector debt.

Support for developing countries on the negotiation of debt claims

 

A4ID lawyers have spoken to African government officials and lawyers about the defence of debt claims at conferences in Senegal and Zambia and advised the government of Cameroon on negotiations with creditors.

 
Microfinance - Five Talents

 

A4ID lawyers have advised microfinance providers, such as Five Talents, on constitutional and governance issues and, for example, will be working with Oxfam on the creation of microfinance funds in Eastern Europe.

 
Jubilee Debt Campaign and Oxfam policy on debt

 

A4ID lawyers have advised Jubilee Debt Campaign and Oxfam on legal issues in connection with their public statements about the debt-trading activities of vulture funds and the potential effects of corruption when associated with assignment of developing country debt.
