Development Partner ToughStuff International wins prestigious Ashden Award

A4ID congratulates Development Partner ToughStuff International (TSI) on its recent 2011 Ashden Award.  These awards “bring to light inspiring sustainable energy solutions in the UK and developing world and help ensure that they are spread more widely”.

A4ID is proud of its role in brokering a number of vital projects for ToughStuff, including intellectual property advice on trademark registration, review of its supply contracts and advice on how to undertake a Clean Development Mechanism project in Madagascar.

ToughStuff is a multi-award winning social enterprise that works to provide affordable solar-powered products for low income people in the developing world.  Not only does solar power improve access to power by reducing their reliance on costly kerosene lamps and batteries, but it also reduces the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels and disposable batteries.

Its products include things such as an LED lamp that can be used as a central light, task light or torch, which replaces a smoky, dangerous kerosene lamp, enables children to study better, and improves safety, or a set of radio connectors to directly power radios and save the purchase and disposal of up to 8 dry cell batteries a month.
