A4ID joins campaign for street children

The International Day for Street Children: Louder Together launches on 12th April.

The new campaign gives a louder voice to the millions of street children all around the world so their rights can no longer be ignored.

A4ID has already added its voice to the campaign. In a letter published in the Guardian newspaper, A4ID’s Chief Executive, Yasmin Batliwala, joined the heads of other leading charities, politicians and public figures to call for the protection of street children’s legal rights.  Read the letter here.

But together we are louder, which is why we are encouraging all our supporters to join in and push for the protection of the legal rights of street children.

Ignored

There are currently 100 million children living on the streets around the world. Many have little or no access to basic services such as healthcare, clean water or education.

But street children do have rights. It is just too often these are ignored by the governments that should protect them.

A4ID Chief Executive, Yasmin Batliwala said, “The plight of street children is all too often forgotten by those who should be protecting them. With little support they face a daily struggle of abuse, hunger and exclusion as the international community fails to realise their rights.

“It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to speak out, as collectively we can make ourselves heard. A4ID is proud to add its voice to this campaign which helps give street children a louder voice."

Child rights

All countries – apart from the USA and Somalia - have signed and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and have a legal obligation to work towards ensuring that all children’s rights are integrated into national law.

The Convention sets out every child’s right to protection, participation, provision and prevention from harm. It is universally recognised that all children should have these rights realised; however many government policies and practices still do not include street children.

Add your voice

April 12 2011 will be the first International Day for Street Children. It will then become a yearly event that will continue to raise awareness of the needs of street children worldwide.
