The College of Law

With centres in Birmingham, Chester, Guildford, London, Manchester and York, The College of Law is the UK's leading provider of legal education. The College of Law takes a leading role in student pro bono initiatives and won the award for Best Law School Student Team at the Attorney General's Pro Bono Awards 2008. It currently funds £500,000 worth of pro bono projects in five major cities.

 
Oxford Pro Bono Publico, Univeristy of Oxford

Oxford Pro Bono Publico is a collaboration between postgraduate law students and Law Faculty members of Oxford University, dedicated to the practice of public interest law on a pro bono basis.


The group assists practising solicitors and barristers acting on a pro bono basis with the preparation of research briefs, expert opinions,
amicus curiae and policy submissions.  Recent work has included providing an expert opinion on the legality of the Israeli separation barrier, investigation into the legal status of prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay and research on the treatment of homosexuals in the US military for litigation in the US Federal Court.

The group welcomes project submissions from pro bono lawyers, NGOs and other international organisations involved in the protection of human rights and the promotion of public interest law.

 
BPP Law School (Pro Bono Centre)

BPP Law School is a leading provider of professional legal education with four specially designed and highly equipped Law Schools in Leeds, London (Holborn and Waterloo) and Manchester. Over 5,000 students study at BPP every year. 

 

BPP's Pro Bono Centre operates a wide variety of pro bono projects in the local community. They also store information about pro bono, public interest law and not-for-profit organisations, which provides academic and practical resources for law students and staff.

 

The Centre's projects have won several awards including The Lawyer Award for Pro Bono Activity of the Year 2005, finalist status for the same award in 2004 and 2007 and two High Commendations in the Attorney General's Student and Law School Pro Bono Awards 2007.

 
The British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL)

The Institute was created by the merger in 1958 of the Society of Comparative Legislation (1895) and the Grotius Society (1915).

 

BIICL works to advance the understanding of international and comparative law, and to promote the rule of law in international affairs.

 

It is to be a leading research institute of international and comparative law, promoting its practical application through research publications, conferences and discussion.

 
Manchester University School of Law

Legal education has been provided at Manchester since 1872. In 2004, the Law School's range of specialisms broadened with the establishment of the University of Manchester.

 

Manchester School of Law is a research-led teaching department, and received a top 5A rating in the last two 1996 and 2001 Research Assessment Exercises (RAE).

 

The following research units are housed within the School: the Centre for Law and Business; Centre for Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies; Institute for Law, Economy and Global Governance and the Centre for Social Ethics and Policy, in collaboration with the Institute of Medicine, Law and Bioethics.
